This collection of letter-tracing worksheets provides great pre-writing practice for young learners. There are 2 pages for each letter of the alphabet, divided into one page for each uppercase letter and one for each lowercase letter. Each letter also has a corresponding image for students to color as well as space for them to practice writing the name of the image. This adds in a fun element and helps learners to connect to what they already know!
Getting Started with Tracing Worksheets
It’s very important to introduce and practice this activity with your students before having them work on it independently. Letter formation is a critical early learning skill, and we want our students practicing correctly and developing good habits as they move into more advanced writing in the future.
How to Use Tracing Worksheets for Whole Group Instruction
To get started as a whole group, all students need a copy of the worksheet you’re using, and you need one for demonstrating. Point to the image on your paper (or board), and say the name of the image clearly, emphasizing the first letter sound. Have your students repeat the word a few times.
After your students have repeated the word a few times, model “finger-tracing” the large bold letters at the top of the page (or on the board). Talk through the letter formation as you trace, placing emphasis on where you start and end the letter. Then have your students “finger-trace” the letter a few times along with you. Next, give your students a few minutes to practice tracing the letters independently (with a pencil or crayon), as you walk around and assist them as needed.
Once your students have the hang of tracing the letter, restate the word for that letter and write the name of the image slowly, saying each letter as you write it. Give your students a few minutes to write the word on their own paper and to color the corresponding picture.
3 Additional Ways to Use Tracing Worksheets with your Students
- Intervention - Use tracing worksheets for individual or small group intervention. Follow the same steps as the whole group instruction except focus only on the letters that your students need help with.
- Early-finishers - Tracing worksheets make perfect early-finisher tasks! Try laminating pages or putting them into page protectors and letting your students write with dry erase markers. They will love being able to practice and then erase their work when they’re finished. And you will love not needing to make so many copies!
- Makeup Work - Tracing sheets are a great resource to send home as makeup work for students that have been absent from school. The directions are simple, and they are easy to complete with minimal assistance.
However you decide to utilize them in your classroom, these letter-tracing worksheets will provide valuable pre-writing practice for your students. Your students will love completing them, and you will love that they are super low-prep. Simply print them, and you're ready to go! Click here for Tracing Worksheets for Preschoolers.
